‘Prototyping new media innovations for Google Media Labs’

google proto.png

I've spent a couple of years working on various projects for Google. A lot of them looking at how brands could use Google products and media in new and interesting ways. Here's a few examples of the kind of the kind of projects I delivered.

In each of the projects we took them to a prototype stage - to allow us to test with consumers and give Google Media labs partners a hands on experience, rather than yet another powerpoint.

YOUTUBE - GO360º

go 360.jpg

As YouTube began to roll out 360º video on its platform we we asked to look at what could be done with this. There is always a novelty factor with something like 360º video appears, having a phone strapped to your head and being able to look round a virtual environment is all well and good, but it's not something you need to do twice (usually). I wanted to look at how could a '360º view' of the world be used to enhance real world event - not the main experience, but an ‘add-on’ to an experience, like sports, music or news. And this is where 360º LIVE came about - using the YouTube app, and 360º filming we would alert people to see a different, unedited view of the event they are watching, either at home or at the event itself.

The prototype we created shows how this thinking could be added to a broadcast event - in this case F1.

We also extended the idea to show it’s potential for other events and other coms. The full presentation can be found here

MYTOY! - A BEACONS PROJECT

Beacons were the Holy Grain for a while - imaging a world where consumers walk past your business and messages pop up on their device. But the truth is no one wants that “and block” - so all these hard sell messages do, well, nothing. I asked - what if we gave the beacon technology to people and let them link to a device? Beacons are small and can be personalised for pennies. You could add beacon technology to anything from a VIP pass to a McDonald's Happy Meal toy - hence the prototype below - MYTOY!

The prototype was built to show how this technology could be used to give a personal experience to a McDonald's customer - hidden in a toy. Unlocking personalised content, additional content, in store and OOH experiences all with a piece of plastic that cost about 50p.

BRANDED MICRO NETWORKS

1.jpg

In this project we looked a branded micro network experiences. How could you turn a bus for example into a brand experience. Exclusive to the people on 291 to Harringay and can only be accessed for the time you are on it… once you step off the experience is over… until tomorrow morning. Again we built a prototype looking at how this could be used for the likes of Comedy Central as way to build hype around a program launch in a city - why not create a TV show just for those folks on the 291…
